United States environmental leaders are saying that Bush's Advanced Energy Initiative doesn't promote non petroleum energy sources enough, and that it is not going to do anything to wean people off of using petroleum based products.

Tapping Rocks For Power ★★★

A European consortium is drawing closer to building a megawatt-scale power plant that uses bedrock heat... By this time next year, they expect to be transforming this heat into at least 1.5 megawatts of renewable power for the grid.

The group is using a technique known as hot-rock mining, whereby a fluid is pushed through hot rocks and then the resulting hot fluid extracted and used for energy production.

Philippines PNOC EDC Taps Spain's Elecnor For Wind Project

PNOC Energy Development Corp. said Thursday that it has engaged Spanish firm Elecnor S.A. (ENO.MC) to conduct a feasibility study on the development of two wind farms in central Philippines.

Some interesting notes from the article:

  • The feasibility study will be financed by a grant from Spain's Instituto de Credito Oficial.
  • The study will take 18 months to complete, and cost a total of EUR 294850.
  • The Department of Energy has said there are 47 provinces with at least 500 MW of wind potential and 25 provinces with at least 1,000 MW of potential.

Survey Complete at Nevada's Pumpernickel Geothermal Project

Pumpernickel Valley, 30 km (19 mi) southeast of the town of Winnemucca, was identified as one of the top four undeveloped geothermal prospects in Nevada in 2003.

The current survey should aid in defining the boundaries of the geothermal reservoir and in designing the first production test wells, planned for 2006.
