Olympia should keep eye on hot biofuels market ★★

There has been a lot of hype in the news about biofuels of late, and this article questions some of the success biofuel has been having, asking whether market manipulation and tax dollars would be the catalysts some believe or merely perks for those already chasing biofuels.

Would biofuels be getting as much attention without the favourable legislation and tax perks?

Worth noting: Seattle Biodiesel, the largest producer in the Northwest, recently attracted $7.5 million in venture capital financing from a group of investors that included Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen’s Vulcan Capital.

A lenghy story about the use of solar power in Florida, which offers up some interesting numbers and facts:

  • About 86 percent of electricity generated in Florida comes from burning fossil fuels, according to a new report by the state Department of Environmental Protection.
  • Only one new [solar] system was installed in [New Smyrna Beach, Florida] last year, at New Smyrna Beach Middle School, but that was made possible through a different grant.
